2023 Nissan Kicks SV, Potentially Defective Vehicle

An investigation was recently conducted on a 2023 Nissan Kicks SV vehicle to determine how a fire occurred. The vehicle that was examined is shown below. According to the owner, the vehicle had been parked and turned off at the time of the fire. In addition, the owner stated that it appeared to him that the fire was located in the front, passenger side. Since the vehicle, and specifically those components located in the front passenger side were completely destroyed, no components were identified as having caused the fire. Furthermore, according to the owner, the vehicle had been operating satisfactorily before the fire except for an incident where a “low engine power” incident occurred shortly after the vehicle was purchased. Upon completing the examination of the vehicle, three major systems were identified that could have caused the fire, although anything in the area could have been the actual cause. The three systems identified were the passenger side air bag module, a body ground, and a passenger side heated seat relay. Since no evidence of arson was found, it was felt that the cause was almost certainly electrical in nature. No recalls issued to date.

KIA Recalls Telluride Vehicles

Kia America Inc. has announced a recall of approximately 427,407 Telluride vehicles for a potential “roll away” problem This recall pertains to 2020 to 2024 year models. The problem with these vehicles is that the intermediate drive shaft and the right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged. During manufacture, the shafts were not properly mated which caused the splines on the intermediate drive shaft to wear down to the point where they would no longer engage the right front driveshaft. As a result, if parked on an incline, there is nothing to hold the vehicle in place. A roll away vehicle increases the risk of a crash or injury. Owners are therefore advised to engage the emergency parking brake prior to exiting the vehicle, until their vehicle is repaired. Dealers will update the electronic parking brake software and replace the intermediate shafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on or about May 15, 2024. For additional questions, consumers can contact Kia customer service by calling 1-800-333-4542 and referencing Kia recall number SC303.

Honda Recall for Faulty Air Bag Sensor

American Honda Motor Company has recalled approximately 750,000 vehicles for a faulty passenger side air bag sensor. The faulty sensor can cause the air bag to deploy when it is not needed. The sensor can also fail to cause deployment when it is needed. A seat weight sensor can crack and short circuit resulting in the unintended operation. This recall applies to 2020-2022 Honda Pilot, Accord, Civic Sedan, HR-V, and Odessey; 2020 Fit and Civic Coupe; 2021-2022 Civic Hatchback, 2021 Civic Type R and Insight; 2020-2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Passport, Ridgeline, and Accord Hybrid; 2020 and 2022 MDX, 2020-2022 RDX, 2020 and 2021 TLX. Owners should take their vehicles to their Honda dealer for inspection and/or replacement of the sensors at no cost to the customer. Owner notification is expected to begin on March 18th. For additional information, owners can contact Honda by calling 888-234-2138.

Caution: Heat Producing Appliances

Winter is upon us and the country has just experienced it’s first major snowstorm of the year. Daily temperatures are below freezing and night time temps are even lower. What a time for your furnace or heat pump to breaK down! You need a supplemental source of heat until your heating unit can be repaired. Your first thought is to light that gas logs unit in your fireplace. You can use that unit for a little while but, DON’T make the mistake of thinking you can use the unit continuously. Gas logs units, whether vented or not, are not designed to heat an entire home and cannot be left “on” for long periods of time. The problem that is not considered is the products of combustion. If the gas logs unit is in a vented chimney, the tendency of owners is to close the damper to keep as much heat as possible from escaping up the chimney. In doing so, the combustion gasses will enter the living space. If the gas logs unit is in an unvented chimney, the products of combustion will also accumulate in the living space. In either case the gasses are poisonous and cause respiratory problems and even death. Aside from the gases, water vapor is also a by product of combustion. If the water vapor condenses on cooled walls or windows, then water stained walls and windows will occur. If left unattended, mold growth is also a possibility.

Stoves and ovens are another appliance that should not be used to heat a home. The same results that occur with gas logs can occur with trying to use a stove/oven to heat a large living space. If you use an electric stove/oven, you run the risk of premature failure of the electric elements. The same goes for using an electric clothes dryer. And of course, fire is always a possibility.

Ford Recalls F 150 Trucks

The Ford Motor Company has recalled 2021 – 2023 F 150 pickup trucks for a problem with the rear axle. All of the recalled trucks were equipped with the “Trailer Tow Max Duty” package and a 9.75 inch heavy duty axle. These vehicles were recalled because the rear axle hub bolts on either side may break due to fatigue. As a result, the loss of torque transfer to the rear wheels can occur leading to a crash. Approximately 112,965 vehicles have been identified with the defect. Owners will be notified by mail about Ford’s ongoing investigation. Owner notification is expected to begin January 29, 2024 and completed by February 2, 2024. For additional information, owners can contact Ford by calling 1-866-436-7332 and referencing Ford recall number 23S65

Honda Announces Recall

The Honda Motor Company has announced the recall of approximately 250,000 vehicles due to an engine defect. The defect can cause the engine to run improperly, stall, or stop completely while the vehicle is in motion. As a result, there is an increased risk of a crash. The vehicles that are involved in this recall are 2015 – 2020 Acura TLX, 2016 – 2020 Acura MDX SUVs, 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline pickup trucks, 2018 – 2019 Odyssey minivans, 2016 and 2018 – 2019 Pilot SUVs. The engine crankshafts in these vehicles were manufactured in error causing a connecting rod bearing to prematurely fail. The bearing failure can seize on the crankshaft and result in the aforementioned operation. In addition to the risk of a crash, a damaged engine can also increase the risk of a fire and personal injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Notification of vehicle owners is expected to begin o/a January 2, 2024. Owners should take their vehicles to their Honda dealer for inspection. According to Honda, the company will reimburse owners who paid for repairs at their own expense. For additional information, owners can contact American Honda Motor

RAV4 Fire Hazard

Toyota has recalled approximately 1.9 million RAV 4s for a potential fire hazard. The vehicles involved in this recall include model years 2013 – 2018. The problem with these vehicles is that the battery hold-down clamp can allow the battery to mopve, if not tightened sufficiently, as the vehicle is making turns or negotiating bumps in the road. As the battery shifts, the positive terminal can come in contact with the hold-down clamp or any other metallic object and short circuit. The short circuited battery can lead to an engine fire. A repair is currently being designed which will involve the hold-down clamp, battery tray and battery. Owner notification is expected to begin in late December. In the meantime, consumers can contact Toyota with any questions by calling 1-800-331-4331.

Kia Anti-theft Class Action Update.

A Tik Toc challenge whereby Kia and Hyundai vehicles are being stolen has been public knowledge for several months. Basically, the challenge amounts to a theft of either a Kia or Hyundai vehicle using information obtained from a video posted on Tik Toc. The video purports to demonstrate how easy it is to steal a vehicle using a flathead screwdriver or USB cable. Due to a design flaw, the thieves can target 2011-2021 Kias and 2016-2021 Hyundais, any model. Both vehicle brands use a steel key and not a key fob or push button to start the engine. A class action lawsuit was filed and in May of this year, a tentative agreement was reached. The agreement will allow class members to receive payments for theft-related loses, reimbursement of insurance deductibles, and increased insurance premiums. However, the settlement has to be approved by the court and a decision is expected either this month or in October. Once the settlement is approved, a notice will be sent to all class members explaining the claims process within 60 days. A separate website will also be launched with the same information. There is nothing to be done by Kia and Hyundai owners at the present time except to watch for the notice in the mail or on ksupport@kiausa.com. In the meantime, it is advisable to purchase a steering wheel lock, wheel locks, or some other device to keep your vehicle from being stolen.
