The microscope shown above is used to analyze evidence that is not easily seen by the unaided eye. For example, the hydraulic hose shown below, burst leaving a fairly large opening. The opening was microscopically examined in order to determine if it was intentionally created by cutting or if it failed under normal operating conditions.
The above photograph shows the microscopic condition of the copper strands woven into the jacket. The strands were found to have failed under the stress of normal operating conditions rather than having been cut.
The microscope has also been used to examine wiring for evidence of arcing and short circuiting. In addition, the microscope has been used to examine metal and plastic pipe fittings for evidence of how they failed. Furthermore, examination of threaded screws and fittings is well served by microscopic review. It should be noted that, when necessary, a transmission electron microscope has been used in the analysis of a material.
