          Electrical testing is also, at times, required. When questions of lightning damage arise, such in an air conditioning unit, it is necessary to determine the extent of damage. The photograph on the left illustrates the testing of the compressor windings for short circuit to the casing. Instances also arise involving the assesment of a vehicular computer system. The photograph on the right shows a portable scanning device attached to the vehicle communications port. The scanner reads the vehicle computers such as the engine control module and determines what is and  what is not operating correctly. Although the vehicle does not have to be running, battery power has to be available in order to complete the scan. Information obtained from a scan can be useful in determining whether a vehicular defect existed prior to an accident or fire.
