  Recent Safety Defect Notices
     March 2011

Caterpillar has announced that they have discovered a problem with C15 diesel engines. These engines were built with a defective weld on a combustion tube. As the weld deteriorates, heat can impinge and burn through the body and result in a fire. The engines were built between April 24, 2006 and March 27, 2009. Owner notification is expected to begin by late April, 2011. The repair is expected to be available by late July 2011. For further information, contact Caterpillar at 800-447-4986.

Coachmen, 2009 - 2010 Dyna Aire Dynamax 5th wheel, 1999 - 2010 NRC motorhomes, Tiffin motorhomes, King of the Road recreational vehicles, and United Specialties recreational vehicles are all recalling their products that are equipped with 1200 series Norcold refrigerators. The refrigerators contain a sensing algorithm or a thermal switch which is designed to shut off power if higher than normal temperatures are detected in order to prevent a fire. The response times are insufficient and as a result, a hydrogen gas leak can evolve into a dangerous fire. Owners can contact Norcold at 1-800-767-9101 for additional information.

Ford is recalling 2010 Ford Rangers manufactured between October 15, 2009 and May 19, 2010. The fuel line, in the area of the throttle body shield, may not have been properly protected. If the protective convolute was not properly installed, the edge of the shield can contact the fuel line. Over time the fuel line can leak and lead to a fire in the presence of an ignition source. For additional information, owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332
