Honda Motor Company is recalling approximately 700,000 vehicles worldwide for a problem with a defective spring that can cause engine stall. According to msnbc.com, the breakdown of the recall is as follows: 167,000 vehicles in Japan, 156,000 in China, 233,000 remaining in Asia, and 122,000 in North America. According to Honda's website, the company will recall 97,201 vehicles in the United States to replace what it calls a "lost motion spring". Although vague, their explanation implies that the springs open and close the intake and exhaust valves, alternately compressed and released by the rocker arms. The springs can break and when they do, can cause abnormal engine noise, engine damage, and in the process, engine stall. Notification of vehicle owners will begin March of 2011.
